The Dry season in the Top End has quite a few distinguishing features. Dragonflies come out. The locals venture into the sea, and just about everyone goes to the Darwin Cup. Held on the first Monday in August Darwin shuts down for its picnic day when over 20,000 people descend on the Darwin Turf Club to make merry and win their fortunes with merriment usually the winner on the day. The Turf Club is the backbone of the tourist season for Darwin and has been so for many years. As such it has become a professional, well run and well organised place to visit for food and drink as well as a flutter on any of the other 41 race days that are held during the rest of the year.
