Mietta's Review
Well-done Japanese food in a pleasant room has attracted a loyal clientele here since 1989. In the beginning of August 2005 well known chef Kazu Nomura took command of the kitchen resulting in a more adventurous interpretation of Japanese food. The courtesy and service remains as correct as always. There is also a small sushi bar and a well explained wine list. Aya is an ornament to its suburban location.

Other published opinions

Age Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 14/20 "We've always loved the frosted glass screens that separate the tables at Aya, turning them into mini booths. No matter that you can still hear your neighbours' heated discussion; it's a nice play on the Japanese art of carving out a little privacy in a crowded world"

Herald Sun Dining Out, Stephen Downes, 29/8/06 Score: 13/20 "Aya tables acceptable to good dishes that lean heavily towards Japan and are sometimes original. Sushi and sashimi are bound to satisfy. Service was haphazard on a night when the restaurant had few customers. The wine list is representative of grape varieties but fairly limited, three table whites and five reds served by glass. Prices are spread nicely, several bottles being in the low 30s of dollars."

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 scxore 14/20 "Aya is the restaurant equivalent of bonsai. Within a single narrow shopfront it tries to create the complete Japanese experience: there's a tiny fish pond in the window, irregular slate tiles on the floor, paper wall lanterns, a sushi bar and even a teppanyaki grill squeezed down the back."

The Age Good Food Guide 2005 "AYA is the Japanese restaurant you want in your own suburb. The long room, with its slate floor, rice-paper shades and booths divided by etched glass, is invitingly comfortable, with enough colour and movement supplied by the sushi bar and teppan table down the back."
