Small Block

Ph: 9381 2244; 130 Lygon St, BRUNSWICK EAST 3057

cafe, $ -
Open Breakfast and Lunch 7 days Dinner Mon-Wed; Licensed; No Cards

Mietta's Review
An exceptional use of space, with a small outside area, opened up onto the footpath to accomodate more funky Brunswick dwellers. The coffee is star here, accompanied by tropical juices, and light meals that always hit the spot. The burgers are great and cheap.

Other published opinions

Herald Sun Extra Food, Bob Hart, 29-07-08 Score: *** "A sparse but stylish space in which breakfasts are as innovative and as well priced as any in Melbourne"

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Small Block will get your motor running. The name refers to its garage theme and, while the concrete-and-metal look is minimalist, the menu is anything but"

Herald Sun Bob Hart, 08-03-08 "Small Block is on a corner of Lygon St, across a side-street from the excellent Rami mideastern restaurant. It is part of a stereotypically Brunswick array of restaurants, cafes, winebars, continental delis and butchers, a motorbike shop and an establishment in which ladies of the night selflessly practise their essential social work. Small Block is a sparse but stylish space in which breakfasts as innovative and as wellpriced as any in Melbourne are served until well into the afternoon to devoted locals and a few knowing blow-ins. It is open all week and jampacked at weekends."

Herald Sun Cafe Culture Mike Bruce 12/7/05 score 18/20 "Lovingly prepared food that takes cafe fare up a notch."

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "Prop at the window counter to enjoy one of Melbourne's best BLTs or sunniest serves of eggs benedict and a high-octane coffee. Better yet, snag the red booth, spread the papers"

The Age Cheap Eats 2004 "SMALL BLOCK has the verve of a top-shelf Brunswick Street cafe but without the pretensions or traffic restrictions. Contrary to its billing, this is a spacious retrofit that has outside seating to catch the sun"

The Foodies' Guide 2004,Allan Campion & Michele Curtis,'It's the local hipsters' haunt where everything is minimalist but the food. They have a mean BLT and sumptuous gnocchi, but are known for their corn fritters. The all-day breakfast lures the locals out of bed, even if it is at 2pm.Finish with a skilfully made coffee, delivered by friendly staff, and settle back with a real estate mag like everyone else here.'
