Mietta's Review Eric Yong and his Balinese wife, Listiana, have been running Melati since1984. The oldest Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne, Eric proclaims. Vegetarians will be well served. There are vegetarian entrees, noodles, rice and main courses, all suitably priced. For the carnivores, there are more than 30 dishes. There is the traditional banquet "rijstaffel". That's Dutch for rice table, a legacy of Indonesia's colonial past. The traditional rijstaffel is a feast of rice, fresh pineapple slices, cucumbers, mango, bananas, dried shrimp, peanuts, crisps, fresh coconut, a selection of sambal, chicken or beef satay, hot curry and spicy fish. Melati's "rijstaffel" is more modest. It has to be, if one is to savour anything else; like its martabak entree. This is pan-fried spicy beef with spring onion encased in a pastry pillow. Babi guling, a Balinese roast pork served with salad or vegetables and crackers, is another traditional favourite. Soothe the palate with the kolak Bali dessert - ripe banana and tiny pieces of jackfruit simmered in a sauce of coconut milk and sugar.

Or perhaps ...
Trinitas Thai Victoria
Cafe Platia Victoria The cafe is bright and modern with its doors opening right out onto the busy street. Chargrills are popular as well as risottos.
Italy 1 (Camberwell) Victoria It's a popular local lunch and dinner place for good standard Italian dishes. Faux-Italian atmosphere done well.
Magic City Cafe & Wine Bar Victoria Magic City, an ex-games parlour in Burke Rd Camberwell, has become the smartest spot in the strip. Great pan-Asian food.
Melati Indonesian Restaurant Victoria claim that Melati is the oldest Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne. Their menu has vegetarian entrees, noodles, rice and main courses
Oji Victoria Oji is the sort of place people boast to their friends about as being their own little discovery. And fair enough too.
Tandoori Den Victoria Prakash Mairchand is an excellent host and very proud of his tandoori oven and the dishes that come from it.
Teahouse On Burke Victoria The setting at Tea House is not overtly 'Chinese'. The service is professional, the price, though higher than in a more Asian suburbs, is reasonable and the food is good.
