Mietta's Review
The Tote has been host to independent rock bands since the early seventies and not much has changed since then. The posters on the walls are a veritable museum of the independent rock scene in Melbourne. It gave bands such as The Living End and Cosmic Psychos their start and continues the tradition offering live music seven nights a week. The only respite is the comfortable beer garden, the rest is simply drink and rock'n'roll.

Other published opinions

The Age Michael Harden, 21-5-2007 "The well-smoked, grungy space always feels like it is recuperating from a hard night the night before - a little greasy and in need of a shower but somehow still exuding a seedy but inescapable sexiness. The L-shaped bar is chipped and worn and attended by staff that have so much rock cred - tatts, T-shirts, attitude - that they could be killing time pulling beers before they step onto the stage in the band room out the back. There are band posters everywhere (including plastered over the windows) highlighting some of the Tote's finest musical moments. Best of all, there is a jukebox boasting a superb collection of rock tunes. Vintage AC/DC is a crowd favourite."
