Mietta's Review
A great asset for its locals, but on Sundays, Haveli attracts Indians from all over Melbourne for its southern Indian vegetarian brunch with a substantial range of dishes of good quality and variety. There is a large display kitchen here and at the front is the griddle where the giant dosas are cooked. These are like pancakes but made to an enormous size whilst remaining lacy fine. They are picked up and quickly shaped round a wooden tube and then served looking like a parchment manuscript. Also popular are dishes from the tandoori oven - lamb chops and salmon.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "In business long before many of its family-based clientele were born, Haveli has been spicing up Doncaster with tasty Indian standards (and belly-dancing routines) since 1981"

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "It seems conservative Doncaster has an exotic side: a place where, on Friday and Saturday nights, a bellydancer jiggles her stuff and gets a few diners doing the same."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 Haveli regulars will be pleased to know that, due to popular demand, they're bringing back their famous south Indian Sunday lunches. At other times, diners can enjoy a menu of dishes from all over the subcontinent.

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "HAVELI is situated in a large suburban shopping square, so locals often postpone picking up the groceries until Sunday afternoon so they can partake in the popular 'Punjabi food fair', a keenly priced all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet."

The Age Cheap Eats 2004 "LIKE the peach-toned decor at this Doncaster institution, the prices for chef-proprietor Baby Thomas' refined Indian cooking seem trapped in the '80s. Long-time regulars love the south Indian vegetarian brunch served every Sunday"

The Sunday Age, 23.04.00, Bernadette Clohesy "This is upmarket dining with glossy menu and spanking new cutlery and napery. You're invited to see the tandoor ovens but what comes out of them is more interesting. Tandoori salmon marinated in tandoori spices and yoghurt was special. The rogan josh is a winner with tender chunks of lamb saffron and yoghurt. They actually did win a prize this year for their chicken butter cream (which they call the haveli special). It's cooked with tomato and delicate spices and finished with a delicious cashew nut cream sauce. There's a wide choice of vegetarian dishes."
