Mietta's Review
The first cafe in Block Place before the latte-craze hit Melbourne; Cafe Segovia set the standard for cafe food and good coffee. Opened in the mid 80s it's seen a few management changes but little about its mission has changed. A comfortable cafe with inside booth seating and laneway seats in high demand throughout the day, and some evening particularly during summer, a small band sets up in the lane way. The menu is classic cafe fare with a slight Spanish influence and the service is young and hip. The prices are slightly high but in line with the cafes that surround it.

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 Segovia is a chip off the old Block.

The Age Cheap Eats 2004 "THE formula for the quintessential Melbourne cafe was invented by Segovia. Take one historic laneway, add a big airy space and cheek-by-jowl tables, chuck in a timber bar, a flock of black-clad staff and a good espresso machine, and you're set."

Terry Durack wheels out the purple prose cloaked in the rosy mist of memory to use Segovia to demonstrate Melbourne's mastery of "casual dining". Cheap Eats reckons it's for people watching. We'd go with Terry on this one. Reviewed The Age Cheap Eats 2004, The Sunday Age, Eat Streets 3/6/01, The Sydney Morning Herald, good living, dec 7-13, 1999, 'Melbourne we love you', Terry Durack
