Mietta's Review
A comfortable place which feels very flexible. Have a full meal or a snack, there is always an excellent selection of cheese (mainly imported) and very good blackboard full of wines by the glass. The room is divided into sections with the bar in the middle and has a pleasant atmosphere with big chairs to sit back in. However noise level varies according to the time and vagaries of the customers. These can include pre and post theatre goers, wine tasters and business folk.

Other published opinions

Herald Sun FIONA JOY, 20-04-08 "A colleague from out of town wants to meet up for dinner and has requested a relaxed venue with a decent steak. Nothing tricky about that. I've been told the rib eye at Punch Lane is worth travelling for. Its a cosy venue, an old-style pub brought up-to-date with dark wood floors and red leather wing chairs. Wine racks loom down on us and a huge blackboard is devoted to the extensive cheese selection."

Age Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 15/20, One Hat "With its red leather chairs, dark-wood interior and rather brusque menu, you could mistakenly write off this laneway wine bar as a wannabe London gentlemen's club"

Gourmet Traveller 2008 Australian Restaurant Guide "Full of subtle, studied charm, Punch Lane s, in many ways, the archetypal Melbourne bistro"

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 The affable, knowledgeable staff are more than happy to guide you through the comprehensive wine list, the wonderful cheese-by-the-gram list, or the full Euro-accented menu

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 score 15/20, 1 Hat "More than a decade has passed since Punch Lane opened its doors on the eastern edge of Chinatown. Its arrival heralded the new breed of city wine bars and dining rooms, and it remains one of our best. While the kitchen team has changed over the years, owner Martin Pirc has ensured that the front-of-house attitude has remained informed, friendly and professional."

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 Pre and Post Theatre "The Spanish plate to share, matched with a glass of plonk from the blackboard selection, makes for perfect theatre going sustenance. The pavement seating area is popular in summer."

The Age melbourne magazine June 05 Melinda Houston "Punch Lane is one of the snuggest bars in Melbourne. A tiny lobby (complete with coat rack) leads to two elegant, compact rooms warmly furnished with dark wood tables and beautiful dark red leather club chairs"

The Age Good Food Guide 2005 score 14/20 "Punch Lane offers a warm and welcoming environment. And since the arrival of chef Andrew Neilson (ex-Circa), the food here is once again equal to the ambience"

AGFG 2004, score 14/20, excellent wine list, excellent bar

Herald Sun, citylink, 16/3/04, Stephen Downes, Score 12/20,'This time, too much of Punch Lane's food was ordinary.Choice is limited, and at the prices this place charges, quality and variety should be very much better.A good range of wines is expensive;six table whites and the same number of reds are available by the glass.'

Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide 2004, 1 Black star, Excellent wine list,'regulars come for pre-theatre drinks or meals, knowing that the slick service ensures they won't miss curtain up, and colleagues meet here after work to enjoy the wines or graze on a mezze platter.'
