Mietta's Review
Run by the three daughters, all chefs, of Armadale's Tartine guru Jan Maskiell, a respect for fresh produce and an understanding of catering is evident in what is on offer. Gas Eatery and Supplies has a prime location in the affluent South Melbourne strip, and their prices reflect this. Whilst often expensive, the menu with its Middle Eastern twists, is tasty and well prepared. It features interesting salads, filled flat breads, and a vast variety of bits and pieces designed to be shared. In the back fridge there are a small selection of take home meals for the many on the run. Tables line the pavement and inside there are three communal tables, it is popular with locals and at lunch time is always busy, service is efficient and pleasant however most often stretched.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "made pumpkin and harissa dip, marinated olives, and two salads - possibly caramelised pear tossed with figs and gorgonzola or pontiac spuds with chorizo"

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "Gas really heats up at weekends when post-market shoppers swarm the communal tables to refuel on Middle Eastern and Med nibbles. Front up at the counter cabinets and take your pick: perhaps delicate spinach croquettes, sweetly spiced meat-filled borek or Greek-style chicken and pumpkin fritters (all served in terracotta dishes)."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 Part delicatessen, part laid-back cafe, Gas proves a winning combination. Pull up a stool at the long communal table and try a globetrotting selection of mezze and tapas.

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "GAS is doing its bit for international relations, serving dishes from many countries surrounding the Mediterranean."

The Age Cheap Eats 2004,Somewhere we can highly recommend,Good vegetarian options,Excellent breakfasts,'Three sisters run this long, rather groovy cafe that draws ides from the Middle East,Spain and North Africa.Weekend breakfasts can stop traffic...They also make a range of meals to be eaten in or taken home' The Foodies' Guide 2004,Allan Campion & Michelle Curtis,'you'll find some of the most innovative ready-prepared food Melbourne has ever seen...Put together your own selection to take home or eat in,perhaps with a glass of Spanish wine. There is also a range of grocery items that reflect the style of the prepared food, and delicatessen items such as smallgoods and cheese.'
