Mietta's Review
The charm of O'Connell's - a comfortable pub where the upmarket dining room happily co-exists with the bar and bistro - still continues. The wine list is as well chosen and as sensibly priced as ever.

Other published opinions

Age Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 13/20 "If every neighbourhood had a pub like this, chances are you'd seldom leave your home turf in search of good eating. Having made its name and kick-started the gastropub/modern Middle Eastern scene in Melbourne - back in the early 'gos with high-profile chef Greg Malouf, a few chefs later it's still delivering consistently good grub in a comfortable, rather than cutting-edge, space"

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 score 13/20 "The blend of posh nosh and superior pub grub served ins gracious old hotel - has long since made O'Connell's a foodie haunt. There can't be many places where you can park right out front, wash down a beef and Guinness pie with a backvintage Dalwhinnie shiraz from a Riedel glass, and finish off with a ginger snap, or scrumptious hot chocolate profiteroles with Frangelico and hazelnut icecream."

The Age (melbourne) Magazine May 05 Gastro Pubs John Lethlean "The pub that started it all, in many ways, remains remarkably consistent. It's still associated with the mid-'90s glory era of chef Greg Malouf. "

The Age Good Food Guide 2005 score 14/20 "THERE'Ssomething for everyone in the tastefully furnished, tan-hued dining room at the back of this perpetually popular pub."

Gourmet Traveller 2005 Restaurant Guide "The tradition of great food in this great old pub continues with Cath Kalka at the helm. The dining room is an elegant rendition of muted modern chic in a 30s Deco shell. Floor staff are elegant long-timers and understand the wine list"

The Foodies' Guide 2004, Allan Campion & Michelle Curtis,'The restaurant here offers Middle Eastern and Asian-inspired dishes, while the bar caters for simpler tastes, and the wine list will inspire those who may not drink beer.'

The Age, A2, 26/6/04, Matt Preston,'it's hard to go past this trailblazer for a buzzy atmosphere in a cosy and comfotable dining room...internationalist food...A true winter warmer.'
