Preamble "Often helped" sends the following recipe for almond icing, which she says is economical and very satisfactory.

1/4 lb Almond Meal

3/4 lb Icing Sugar

1 whole Egg

12 drops Almond Essence

Method
Sift icing sugar, add the almond meal, then gradually add the egg and the essence. Roll out, cut to the shape of the cake.
Before putting the icing on the cake wipe the whole surface with the white of an egg. This makes the icing cling well.
The next day add the royal icing. When putting on the royal icing it is well to add a second coat after the first one has dried, the second coat being more moist. This makes an even surface, as it flows over the first.
