Tasmania

Australia’s smallest and most southerly state is an island. Hobart with a population of 195,000 is Australia’s tenth largest city and Launceston (98,400) the fifteenth. Tourism accounts for 3% of the country’s total. Migrants from non-English speaking countries make up 6.7% of Hobart’s population with the result that, apart from a smattering of Asian restaurants, this is Aussie territory.

Population and restaurants are to be found on the mild east coast and in the north from Launceston to Burnie. The two larger cities both have some first class restaurants charging extraordinarily low prices.

Tasmania’s European climate produces some of Australia’s best produce, good wine from the Burgundian grape varieties, and some excellent cheeses.
